At last I can answer my own question as the bike is now running perfectly. As I could not get any more info about the gear position sensor (gps) from the Kawasaki people I have puzzled out the following. In my opinion the gps on a W650 is merely to tell the igniter when we are in 1, 2 or 3 to enable the rev limiter. That's ALL it does on THIS bike. In my case my igniter is faulty in that the rev limiter must think I am over-revving when I'm not. Hence the problem is only in 2nd and 3rd. (If you want to know why it is not in 1st I will give you the rather long explanation) So I have unplugged it and now the igniter thinks I am in 4th or 5th all the time and the rev limiter is turned off. The gps has no bearing on ignition timing. I guess we don't expect to over-rev in 4 and 5 anyway. As long as I don't over-rev in 1,2 or 3 all will be ok. I have never been over 5000rpm anyway. I had to bypass the neutral wire from the gps plug or the neutral light would not work and I would have to de-clutch to run the starter.

Glad you got it sorted. Modern bikes have so many gizmos and gadgets old bikes never had, which is fine, until they fail and even the mechanics don't know what to do with them. Well done.
