KLR 250 VIN

Recently purchased on old farm bike - KLR250 and I am having trouble determining the year.
The VIN is 13 digits (including the dash) and all of the VINcode search engines want 17 digits.

Code is KLR250D-020205 on the steering neck.

The plastics look like a 2000 model (olive green)

klr250d models produced from 1984 kawasaki had 17 digit vins from 1981 dont know where on your bike it will be see if you can trace year by engine number

From the Wiki - "The Kawasaki KLR250 was a motorcycle produced from 1984 to 2005,"

17 digit VINs started with motorcycles from 1981. (apparently)
So it should have 17 digits by default. ??

But it doesn't.

And the VIN starts with KLR250D - so you would have to believe it is a KLR.

I have read somewhere that bikes built for local (Japanese) consumption may have had this 12/13 digit VIN.

i.e. Japaneese built non-export.

Can anyone confirm this?

You could try going to a Kawasaki dealer and get them to check the VIN for you.

That engine number seems about right for that frame. The 17 digit numbering system is mainly the American market. Afik all Australian delivered bikes will have the 13 digit numbering system. I have checked all my bikes and they are all 13 digits. I thought it might be a Kawasaki only thing but I have a few old Hondas as well with 13 digits. If you are having trouble with VIN numbers, go to Kawasaki and get them to check it for you. I have found google isn't much help when researching VIN numbers. If you order parts from them for an old bike they want the VIN anyway to make sure they order the correct parts.

Every time I looked for that VIN, I got various European websites. Maybe not for our market?
