I've just negotiated a deal to purchase a 1975 Kawasaki KH500 triple to add to my collection.:shot:

This is a local barn find that will require major restoration.

The main thing is... its in complete unmolested condition with no major rust in the frame.
Only thing non gen is a set of chambers.

Will get some pics up when I get my hands on it....looking forward to another resto/thread on this baby.:ohyeah:

Geez your an impatient lot.....

OK here we go....these pics are after a quick bath..... if any one knows Bundy? its famous for its red soil, and the bike was covered in it.

The guy I bought it from is the second owner...he purchased it in 1983,rode it for a few years then parked it.
Before he stored it...he soaked the bike with wd40 all over and placed a cover on it.
He then went on to say the cover had come off a few years back and didn't realize.

But then went on to say .... he regularly took out the plugs and feed some oil to the cylinders...hence why its not ceased.

Anyhow...here it is in all its glory.

What? the fact that he's indeed mentally unstable?

It's also possible that many small bits could be the same as the Z series, which could be good as far as availability?
Is the headlight protector any good or is it passed it? If it's any good and ya decide to do away with it I may be interested.

Obviously sales were not very brisk at Brisk Sales. hehehe  Oh you crack meself up Red. hehehe

Actually I remember the Brisk Sales dealership at the Gabba well, as it was from there that R Z rode his R Z out of the showroom for the first time just a few years earlier.
I guess sales of the bigger smokers were a bit slow now that the Zeds had been on the market for a couple of years.

The original buyer probaly got a pretty good deal on a bike that had been sitting in the showroom for that long. A very high WK/DS ratio. White Knuckle per Dollar Spent , so to speak.

Zed900
26-08-12, 07:08 PM
I guess the original rims date stamped as per the Z's? if ya not worried about things like that just buy DID rims. SS spokes look the part but of course the OEM are the go for originality.
I don't think standard spokes would be hard to get but an original date coded rim might take a while as well as cost a bit to re-chrome?

Lace 'em yourself! It's really not that hard, and very satisfying. Geez, if I can do it anyone can.
Lacing shouldn't be any more than $80 - 120 each?

Then really piss the wife off and throw them in the fan forced oven for a bit of a bake.

Have just ordered a ship load of goodies from the USA...switch blocks, mirrors, blinkers, seat cover ,m/c repair kit, assorted nuts and bolts, gasket kit,air box, fork rubber dust seals and more.

I only have a Repco glass at the moment.....have a "Stanley" original on the way from the UK, but apparently it may take "up to 42days" to get here. The Repco light is pretty cheap to buy but if you did want to trade it's all yours. I think I've got a spare inner and outer rim for the light, but I'd need to check the condition of them. Thanks mate....my wheel has "Takasago 185x19 51 305".
So it will fit, shipping could be the killer...will ask the question.

Zed900
31-08-12, 09:31 PM
So yours was actually built in '75 then. I thought maybe your wheels may have been manufactured during '74 for a '75 build. Not sure of the significance of the "305" either, but the Z1's all seem to have the "303" stamp.
Going by what Chimp paid for re-chroming his rims, why don't you just get yours re-done?
How big/bad is the flat on your front rim?
A small flat spot in the rim isn't too much of a drama in the overall scheme of things. My front also has one, i.e. a small area that is not able to be pulled out via the spokes. I left it like that as the tyre will basically compensate for that. I also asked the shop when they fitted the tyres and checked my lacing work and they weren't concerned either. Of course that may be different if you plan on racing, but I can't notice anything bad/odd while riding with my front wheel.

gpz750turbo
01-09-12, 03:28 PM
Tag says 12-1975...not sure what to do with the rims as yet.....the ebay link you pasted has already been sold.
The the local chromer is super slow and does shite work.
I will be sending some stuff to Pete "chain guard, grab rail, front guard, and head light holders"...to have his man chrome on my behalf.

I'm struggling to come to grips as to where the gauge cluster meter damper rubbers go.
I don't know if the go inside or outside the cover....according to the parts pic below.....#5

Pretty sure they go on the outside Dave, just going on diagram the washer is the same diameter as the rubber, therefore rubber sits on the outside followed by washer and nut. Also the rubber acts as a shock.hope this makes sense

Some of those repro kits came be slightly off the mark. I know the gauge set I bought for the Z1 had collars that were too short (around 4mm less than stock) which meant after you tighten it all up the clocks still had a lot of movement in them? Having said that you'd expect the rubbers to be close to the right size.

I never had a maintenance issue with polished alloy? Give it a hit with Mothers or Meguiars every 6 months or so and it all stays ticketty boo. Only time I ever had a problem was on the old A4 when we first moved to Tassie. Had to stay in a beachfront caravan park cabin for around 3 weeks while looking for somewhere more permanent. Salt spray was wafting over the poor old girl most days, and it knocked the s h i t out of the alloy.
I hate clear coat with a vengeance, probably a throw back form the ole days when it started to weather, craze and look crap about 2 days after you brought it home.

gpz750turbo

I didn't clear coat the Z1R legs....and as you say a quick going over with alloy polish brings them back.

Good question Stu...

All of the parts I've bought come from the USA....Z1 enterprises...Z1 parts.net...Reproduction decals and ebay.
Australia is a joke as far as parts pricing go's,for the exact same product.

It all depends on how fussy you are I guess, although this is not a concourse resto, if any parts can be restored like the master cylinder below...I will spend a bit of time with them.

The switch blocks could have been restored..also the blinkers and fuel cap could of been re chromed at a large cost.
But why would you bother when you can buy quality reproductions for....

4 Blinkers and stems = $100
1 Fuel cap..............= $40
2 mirrors................= $32
L/H switch block......= $75
R/H switch block......= $49

So far I've spent close to 2 grand on replacements parts.
D.D.D Rims and spokes were $478.75 delivered also replacing fork tube inners, shocks, seat cover, bearings and other miscellaneous bolts and rubber items.

Sorry to disappoint you guys...was only joking about the riding around part.

Have had a few setbacks...
The spokes I was sent were 5mm to short, couldn't understand why the rims weren't lacing properly.:motz:

The main wiring harness has had a nuclear melt down...still waiting on the rings and the replacement harness that was very difficult to source, but on its way from the USA..

Tomorrow should see it back on its feet....will post some pics then. :eyebrows:

Stuzrx
27-09-12, 09:57 AM
Now that was very unkind Dave !!! :thefinger:

Deffinately unfortunate, but when you say the harness had a meltdown, was it a new unit or OEM?? What happened??
How far into the relacing were you??

gpz750turbo
27-09-12, 03:40 PM
Stu...I reckon I spent 5 hours lasing the front rim.... just didn't seem the same as the pics I took for reference.
Took it to the bike shop and was told they were still not right.

After some investigation on the net found the KH500 spokes were 5mm longer.:banghead:
Now sorted after an emergency shipment from Z1enterprises.

The time had come to inspect the old wiring harness and tidy it up...after removing some of the insulation tape, found the melt down.
Guessing that's why it was parked so many years previous to my purchase.

Anyway as mentioned, new oem s/h harness on the way.

Finally got it on its feet today...slowly coming together after 1 months work.

Here's a before and after shot of one of the carbs that was left to soak in white vinegar for about 3 hours then scrubbed using a toof brush.
The grime literally fell off.

That both the inlet and outlet ports have been ported and polished at some stage.

Although difficult to see in these pics...the ports are super shinny. :eyebrows:

Vinegar was good for the cleaning outside of the bodies..
The carb's had no fuel residue and where pretty clean on the inside...used carb cleaner and compressed air to sought that.

Its seems the 100/90 19 front tire I purchased is to big for the front mud guard...f#$%kit....now I cant get a 90/90 19 "Pirelli Sport Demon..." to match the rear....f#$%kit again....

That's not all....I cant fit my chain guard either because the rear "replica shocks" wont allow that to fit either....f#$%kit one more time.

Anyway have purchased a set of shocks that will fit the bike and currently searching for a 90/90-19 front tire.
