hey KLRguy,
I've only put on a set of flatter handlebars and topbox. The bike wears metzler tourance tyres rather than the factory ones. As you're probably aware it won't be long before I have a braided front brake line and a "fitted" lambswool seatcover. I won't get a staintune and airbox until the stock muffler rusts out. After reading some of the threads I'm keen to get a 12 volt power socket and heated grips, but these will have to wait. I've still got about 30k on the clock.

p.s. I like the look of zippyhippy's lights too!

hey KLR,
yeah I was thinking of putting highway pegs on the KLE for long trips so that you can move around more and not get sore legs/bum etc. I've got a mate with a guzzi cali and he rigged up some bar with exhaust clamps on the frame and I've also seen a honda with bmx pegs that had bolts ideally located on the engine/frame. I was thinking of trying to mount pegs off the sumpguard but I don't think it would be strong enough. Otherwise the headers and the sumpguard block access to the frame. In the end I decided I'd worry about when I was planning to go to Qld etc

As for the lights dan got them at super cheap. they are 55 watt halegon and they were $23 each ul

Wel I bought my bike with a higher screen than standard, got a biggish top box on it and the double stand and lowered to suit a short fat bloke, me. Since then i've slapped a Megacycle pipe on it, has bumped my fuel economy up by approx 70km and I ride it pretty hard especially in the lower gears till I get up to speed. That's it for now, metal bash plate I think will be next, only a matter of time at the current rate before I get pulled up for running a red light and that will be far more expensive than the metal bash plate.

This is what i've done to my KLR.
SW Motec crash bars, Enigine guard, Blue Radiator cover, Blue Bark Busters, Throttle Rocker
Lowered 1", 55 Watt Halegon Spot Lights, Ventura Rack Blue to match the bike, RJays T Bag,

hey Zippy,
did Dusty have to put in relays for the driving lights and can you tell me the approx price of the lights? I'm just comparing yours and KLR's. Obviously both have their advantages.

The Zippy Hippie
01-10-10, 06:56 PM
Hi Dunno. The lights were $46 from super cheap. they are 55 watt halegon utility lights. The wire is 20amp, the flat blade waterproof fuse holder is 20amp also it was about $8.
the Heavy duty Waterproof switch was about $14-$15. we did not need a relay, just ran it straight off the battery. Dusty made the brackets for the lights, as seen in previous pics.
If you want to look at the bike at anytime Dusty can met you halfway from newy and met up for a coffee.

Find a place to fit the HiD ballasts within a foot of the headlights that is away from most water(ballasts are supoze to be waterproof ..I HOPE) .. Best place would be under the front flairing near the lights :top:

Ok have done another small mod to the bike. I like my comfort so i put some
highway pegs on to my crash bars. Now swmotech wanted $135 U.S for these pegs
so my clever Dusty :alberteinstein: once again came up with another solution and went to the bike shop and bought some pegs
with 10mm bolts and took the cheap rubber pegs off and put the rear
foot pegs from my bike on to the bracket and installed them on to the
crash bars. total price 35 bucks priceless. :top:

wholy crap you have spent some $$ lol cool though eh!........what is the dash leds for just the indicator lights in the dash? thats the only thing that lets these bikes down in their standard for i recon, the dash is pretty basic, indicator lights can be hard to see as is the dials{speedo etc} in direct sunlight & a gear position indicator wouldnt go astray either.......oh & i recon there is one other problem, the side stand keeps the bike so up right it will fall over on anything more than a slight angle, not good for a bike thats built for off road as well as on road....minor stuff i know but still it annoying,i intend to keep mine as stock as possible, only adding or changing stuff that will make it a little more suited to my needs, the dash mod would be nice, the stand, some accesory plugs for comms, phone, ipod etc.I dont know about the standard tyres off road as i havent taken them off road yet but on road they seem to have plenty of grip & no noise so if they are even slightly ok off road i`ll be happy. All in all i recon they are a top bike & well worth the low low price new!!!!

hey klrguy can you take a pic of your bike from the front & to one side so i can get a better look at that screen? im not sure i like it but need a better look & there is no doubt that the standard one needs to be a little bigger,i recon i will buy some perspex & have a crack at making one up my self as well as making it a little more vertical, the other idea i had was i have an old visor off a dirtbike helmet laying around & it just so happens that with a slight trim it will fit over the instrument cluster perfectly!

Just did a test of it today and water temp unit not workin and taco not readin right so it is fix it time now .... re route the taco wire to the coil instead of the gauge and see if a wire is pulled on the water temp ....

 When i did the temp sender in and started the bike i didnot read the Destructions so that now the temp gauge works now with the push of two buttons

The taco i have routed to the coil itself and it now works fine instead of intermintent :ohyeah:

All I have done lately is bin it in the dirt whilst doing some fanging, soon to be installed will be crash bars as clearly i'll be dropping it a few more times yet as I do more and more dirt riding. Looking at options i'm leaning very heavily toward the SW Motech options, anyone else looked at/installed crash bars on their KiLleR? If so of the 3 optiosn which way did you go? Did you need to buy a new bash plate as well?

KLR 650 guy
09-01-11, 01:19 PM
Mick id be inclined to buy the Sw Motec crash bars then the bash plate M8 ..... If i had to do it again over i would buy them first before anything else as damage is you worst nightmare as i have found out with all my drops but thank goodness it is all sand drops an not as much damage apart from scraches and two fins in radiator bein sealed up ......

I'm mostly a road rider for sure but recently ie last time I went for a fang, my mate on his weestrom thought we should do some dirt, and so we did, the problem that I ran into was I was fanging along nicely along this piece of bitumen and then about 2 metres before you hit gravel, there's a sign that says gravel road, now IF I had seen said sign I would have slowed up as it was I hit gravel approximating 80-100kmh and promptly realised, hmm, might be a little quick on this stuff, so did what any **** rider would do, panicked, hit the anchors, bit of a wheel wobble and the rest as they say, is history.

Incidentally the bike was handling it fine, there was one loose nut, the one sitting on the bike that was the problem.

gday Mick. sounds like you had a bit of an off mate - hope not too much bark scraped off ...
That is a trap for the unwary isn't it? Hitting the dirt straight off the tar is very unsettling for a little while hey ..?

I find I have to change quite a bit of my riding style when in that situation. Everything has to become much smoother and 'predictive' - very quickly. Throttle control, leaning, braking, weight distribution, everything - changes straight away.
And sometimes it's tricky because often you will go from 80 kph tar to 80 kph dirt but still the whole set up of the rider has to change.

Love it ...

Yer just slow down from your 100 kmh to 80 or less when you come to gravel as it can through you easy without thinkin ... I usley run 60-80 kmh on the gravel with my road tyres but the knobbies can do the 100 kmh easy on gravel ..

so are you going for lower revs on the hwy? more speed?....i recon it might be worth going a tooth or to higher so it cruise a bit better & its not really a sacrifice on dirt as i have no intention to get amongst the really tough stuff........the only down side is it changes the speedo reading & i dont think you can counteract that...........on another note i had the klr seat recovered on sat! yeaaaahhh........well almost,it looks like it been over filled with air coz its very soft & supple, too much i think so its going back on wed to get new foam in it,the stuff they used was 2in thick but soft,i need something firmer as the softer foam flattens out & offers nothing to ease the pressure points something firmer wont give as much a help spread my weight{big job i know lol}....i`ll post up some pic when i get the chance!

my bad i had my other problem in my head which is the 1500 is getting new wheels or different one at least, you didnt say why your changing the sprockets, the reason i ask is that mine sits nicely on the hwy @120klm @5000-5500rpm & doesnt really need the sprockets changed maybe a tooth lower at the back for better fuel economy but thats about it?

Yep Hiway cruzer from now on no more sand ridin on her as it has done to much damage to it now .... So i just want to ride and ride and ride ..Not fall off for no reason ... It has lowered the rpm's by about 500rpm at same speed and it will give more economy aswell and if i need to go offroad on gravel roads only i will change the front cog to a 14 tooth instead of the 16 tooth that on there now

Instead of the E-perv why dont you go the Spot tracker like me as freinds can veiw where you are all the time (in real time) and if you need some little help freinds can help or there is the full optoin of if you fall off up in them there hils over the side of a cliff you push the red help button and the emergengy services swing into action ... All the systems work something like this: A beacon is activated by a crash, a sinking, or manually by survivors. The beacon's transmission is picked up by one or more satellites. The satellite transmits the beacon's signal to its ground control station. The satellite's ground station processes the signals and forwards the data, including approximate location, to a national authority. The national authority forwards the data to a rescuing authority. The rescuing authority uses its own receiving equipment to locate the beacon and makes the rescue or recovery. Once the satellite data is in, it takes less than a minute to forward the data to any signatory nation.
Overview diagram of EPIRB/COSPAS-SARSAT communication system

There are several systems in use, with beacons of varying expense, different types of satellites and varying performance. Note that even the oldest systems provide an immense improvement in safety, compared to not having a beacon.

the spot tracker when triggered notifies an international organisation which then contacts aus authority`s{if they know who to contact or they can get through}but there is no promise that they will respond or even contact rescue services or do it in a timely manner, the problem arises that you have 2 organisations trying to liase to recuse you but the eperb is a direct respone system, once its triggered they come.......in fact ppl have been charged for accidently setting them off in boats & 4x4`s

Well it feels 1.1/2 inch higher in the seat ... well on the gravel here it is tight but i think i need to loosen the adjustin screw a few turns to let the spring move a bit and the rebound needs a bit of tweekin aswell to sofern it up a bit aswell...

Hi all,

just hit the 5000km mark and bike still running like new so I have just put on a new exhaust, a dg o that I brought off ebay and cost me $230 shipped from USA (Bargain). New 4 inch taller windscreen and put in K&N Air filter and K&N oil filter. The screen makes such a difference and makes highway riding 100 times better. Just put on new tyres this week, i brought Dunlop 606's and there sweet and getting bike packed today as heading out to hawker the southern flinders rangers S.A., hoping those new tyres will be a blast on the dirt roads.

Pipe rocks, sound gives off a nice beat and perfect for when I'm creeping up to somebody's blind spot in heavy traffic, got derestricted when I brought bike however I notice heaps of power now with the new exhaust. Off tomorrow to Hawker in the southern flinders rangers for about 4 days and should be plenty of good riding, will put some vid and photos up when I get back.
(If I come back :=)

Peace out!!!

Thanks Rob, just lost interest as what about coming down a rocky hill or wet clay i always use my gears to control and hardly any brake. This seems to take away that control once the throttole is let off. Maybe wrong see how you go when yours is on.

Hey Leigh as from what the manufactor says if you have revs then the gear train is engaged and if you pull the clutch you disengage it as normal and if you are below a sertian rev range (850-1000)

My KLR went in for a much-needed service this week (48,000 km service) and it was time to replace the chain and sprockets. I have gone up to 17 teeth on the front - highly recommended. It makes the KLR noticeably more long legged - the slightly taller gearing makes the the middle gears longer and increases the amount of acceleration in each gear, and in 5th I'm doing lower rpm at 100km/hr (from 4200rpm down to 4000rpm). No problems down low - it is such a torquey bike and the extra work created by the slightly bigger cog is unnoticeable.

I also had the valve clearance checked and I was astounded to find it was still in spec.

Next up - maybe in the next couple of months - will be tyres. I have been running Pirelli Scorpion Trails and will end up getting just over 20,000km out of them - a good innings, 98% commuting on freeways and suburban streets.

I would be fairly happy to go for these tyres again but before I lock in my choice, any suggestions of KLR street tyres that have worked well for others? A streetable set of dual sport tyres is good but if it comes to the crunch the street capability takes precedence over the off road capability, if that makes sense.

Hi KLR Nirvana,
I swear by Metzler Tourance tyres for mostly road use. They can't be too bad if BMW fit them to their GS's.

20,000k`s??????.......wholy crap batman,i put a bridgestone on the rear which is the 2nd tyre from new,the first 1 being the standard dunlop, the front had lasted longer as they usually do but remember the bike has only done 20,000k in total!!!!.......i have done a little bit of off roading but the vast majority is road work........i have just had a look at both the pirelli`s & the metzlers......i dont think i would like to go offroad on the pirelli`s eh & the metzlers look like a better split between on/off road.........how much did you pay for the pirelli`s tim???

If the tyres wont last 20,000kms then I wont spend my money on them, I do too much riding on the road to be buying new tyres every 10,000kms. The first original set of Dunlops didnt even last 6000kms, Ive had no issues with the Mitas 08 tyres & have just replaced them with a new set. They are fairly cheap, hard wearing 70/30 tyres.

Well, as the tread is What have you done, here goes. My KLX250S has been fitted with FMF powerbomb header and FMF Power core 4 muffler, also took the air restricter out of the top of the air box and fitted a Twin Air filter. With that done I've also re jetted the carby. Next will be a dyno tune to make sure everything is set up correctly. Other than more performance, I also changed the the suspension settings. Cranked on a bit more damping on the front and rear to support my weight as the factory settings are for very light riders, and wound up the rear pre load to put a bit more bite into the front as it felt a bit loose when off road. Still haven't tested the new suspenion settings off road yet, but on road the bike handles great.

Hi
Just recently joined as purchased 2013 KLR to get out and see a bit of this great country plus commute to work. Gotta few mods already sorted, sw evo side racks, crash bars, raised screen & givi top box. One thing I have noticed is the seat comfort and think that a sheep skin cover could help especially with the wa summer heat but where can you get them?? Also off road pegs do you get much vib through them?.

KLR Nirvana
17-08-13, 11:24 AM
Welcome Steve and awesome choice of bike (OK I'm biased) but as many here will attest the KLR will do it all. The sheepskin seat cover sounds like a great idea for a hot climate.

I would give these guys a try - they seem to be reasonably priced, and they do a waterproof cover too: http://cruisncomfort.com/page3.php

Custom seat covers for the KLR are difficult to find but these guys have one (bit more expensive though): http://www.sheepyhollow.com/full/prices/prices_main.htm

The other options would be to get a generic seat cover that adjusts to your seat (but hard to say if it would stay put or move around / bunch up), or get one custom made by a place that does sheepskin car seat covers.

Keen to see what you end up with!

And while I'm on this thread, just thought I would add that Romi put a full set of Metal Gear (http://metalgear.com.au/index.php) discs and organic pads on the bike a few weeks ago. They now have 1200km on them and they are absolutely fantastic. Better the OEM in my opinion and an Aussie company too (QLD). Recommended.

yeah the kawasaki seats across the range are at best average but the klr seats are at best are bloody woeful, you can put a sheepskin seat cover on,or as i did for hwy use use a airhawk which helped. The real solution to comfort on klrs is to get them re-padded & covered, mine cost me $200 & made a world of difference but it could have been better if harder/firmer foam was used like whats in the saddleman/corbin seats etc.

While they will never compete with a tenere or ktm,the klr is more than half the price so with carefull selection of parts like tim said disc`s/pads are a good upgrade {i learn the hard way on my first big go in the bush that the brakes are pretty lame,i boiled the front & the back on the first big down hill!....the front getting hot i can accept but the back? i hardly used them lol} the other upgrade thats essential if you go bush is the monoshock,its crappy & if you carry even a small amount of gear will go soft very quickly off road,im a big guy so the front fork springs were next but i sold it.I also found the gearing spread was fairly neutral on or off road but did lack off road on the big hills so trying to find a fix that wouldnt destory it on either was to give it more grunt,mine had a jet kit & a standard air cleaner but i fitted the pipe from a cbr1000 that made it get up & boogie{probly too much for the trails but was awesome on the hwy & around town}
